On November 17th, 2023, we're celebrating National Agriculture Day with our event, 'The Future of Sustainable Livestock Protein: Tough Talk, Tender Taste.' 

We're bringing together four key speakers to discuss the challenges facing livestock producers and the exciting opportunities that lie ahead. Whether you're a producer, researcher, or just interested in the future of agriculture, this event is for you!

Meet Our Keynote Speakers & Panel:

Paul West

Paul West, an Australian chef, sustainable farmer, author and presenter of popular lifestyle TV show, River Cottage, will be giving a keynote address titled "The Consumers' Call." As a chef with a background in haute cuisine and a passion for sustainable farming and organic food, Paul brings a unique perspective to the event.

During his talk, Paul will discuss consumers' expectations when it comes to livestock protein. He will highlight what consumers want from brands and how producers can meet these expectations. Drawing from his experience as the last interface between brands and consumers, Paul will provide valuable insights into meeting the demands of today's conscious consumers and creating a positive connection between producers and their audiences.

John Harvey

John Harvey is the Executive Director and Managing Director of AgriFutures Australia. He brings over 18 years of experience in agricultural research and development, including over five years as the CEO and Managing Director at the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC).

John will discuss agriculture's current state and how it adapts to changing consumer preferences. He will provide insights into the steps producers should take to meet consumer demands, both in the short term and aligned with the Australian Sustainability Framework.

John will also discuss the factors contributing to consumer confidence and trust in the agricultural sector. His talk will offer a comprehensive perspective on how the industry can respond to consumer realities.

Josie Angus

Josie Angus is a cattle producer with more than 30 years of experience. She and her husband, Blair, have transformed their family's cattle operation into a thriving 40,000-head EU-accredited composite herd sprawled across 400,000 acres in Queensland, exporting premium beef products to over 30 countries.

Their farm has recently opened an on-farm abattoir, a pioneering move to revive rural processing and fully integrate the business. Beyond sustainability, Josie and her family are committed to constantly improving the farm's land, cattle, people, and beef.

Johnny Kahlbetzer

CEO of Twynam, Johnny Kahlbetzer, takes us back to the roots with on-farm investments. A pioneer in agricultural business and investment, John will share his insights on current agtech investments in farming, offering a forward-looking perspective on the industry's potential and highlighting ongoing investments.

His presentation will provide invaluable insights into the agricultural sector's current state and future directions, drawing on insights from previous keynote presentations.

Panel Discussion: Paul, John, Josie, and Johnny

Our expert panel will tackle audience questions and provides invaluable insights with their distinct perspectives. Guests will be invited to share their thoughts and questions throughout the event, providing a starting point for a lively and engaging panel discussion.

Summarising Outcomes: Prof Lewis Kahn

At the end of the keynotes, UNE's Professor Lewis Kahn will summarise the main points discussed throughout the event. He is an expert in livestock epidemiology and sustainable agriculture and has a broad perspective on topics such as pasture management, nutrition, and livestock. His summary will help facilitate further discussions during the networking session over drinks and dinner, ensuring interesting and meaningful discussions continue!

Gather and Learn: A BBQ with a difference!

Join us for an unforgettable evening at the Potting Shed on the UNE Campus, where we'll explore the world of sustainable animal protein. The event will begin with a talk by Professor Chris Moran about UNE's initiatives to promote sustainable livestock protein.

Afterwards, prepare for a BBQ Prep session to learn how to prepare the finest sustainable protein dishes.

The highlight of the evening will be a live cooking demonstration with Chef Paul West, accompanied by Peter McGilchrist, Associate Professor of Meat Science at the University of New England. Together, they'll reveal the nuances of sustainable animal protein, including what's on your plate, how to cook it perfectly, and the benefits of these culinary choices.
